CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“My apologies, Madam,” the middle-aged woman in an old-fashioned dress said, and she whizzed past me.

She picked up the cloche and put it back, mercifully covering the decaying food and maggots.

“Should have cleared this away earlier,” the woman muttered to herself. “There’s no excuse for it, really. No excuse. But everyone’s gone, and I’m the only one to look after Sir Euan and the castle, and it’s a big place. I’m not complaining, mind,” she prattled on, as she took the tray with the plates and glasses and carried it out of the room. “I’m very lucky to have my position here, I know that. And Sir Euan would be lost without me. He always says it. What would I do without you, Hattie, he says…”

Wide-eyed, I followed Hattie down the spiral staircase and through the room with the animals.

I was fascinated that she could carry the tray. Either ghosts could touch things from the real world after all, and this housekeeper ghost was doing just that, so to anyone else it would look as if the tray were floating in the air. Or the tray wasn’t real and was instead part of a ghostly reality I was privy to, thanks to my abilities. That was entirely possible, because last night I had seen the room the way Euan, the ghost, had perceived it, namely the way it had been in his lifetime.

That begged the question as to why the housekeeper had “conjured up” food items that were at least a month old.

Maybe the food was real after all, something from my time that the housekeeper could make part of her ghostly existence. Just like with Sir Euan’s room—as a Lothario, clearly his domain in the castle. The material scaffolding was there, since it still existed in the current time. So he could make it “his” on his ghostly plane of existence.

I stopped myself from trying to figure out the logic behind what I was seeing since it was probably pointless anyway to try to make rhyme or reason out of it.

Instead, I tried to focus on the fact that I was seeing another ghost.

I followed Hattie all the way to a subbasement level, where I suspected the kitchen was, and interestingly, she didn’t seem to mind. The housekeeper rarely paused her nonstop chatter, telling me—or, more accurately, herself—about the chores she still needed to complete that day. She also worried out loud about Sir Euan. Was he eating enough? Was he entertaining too much? Then Hattie talked with some annoyance about someone called Archie. I was wondering who that could be when I heard the faint barking again.

Suddenly, a huge dog bounded along the hallway, coming toward us.

I wasn’t exaggerating; it really was humongous. Its back came up to my waist, and when it jumped up on me, its paws on my shoulders, its head right in front of mine, it could have easily knocked me down. I’m a dog person, but I have to admit I screamed.

“Archie, down!” Hattie exclaimed, more annoyed than alarmed.
